Windows Update: Full NVDA Screen Reader Support
A new Windows build is up! This update brings full NVDA support to Echoes, along with better keyboard prompts, a new level-complete announcement, and several fixes. Thank you to everyone who sent feedback — many of these changes came straight from your requests.
NVDA support
Echoes now works with NVDA automatically — there is nothing to turn on. When NVDA is running, it speaks the menus, settings, tutorial, community hub, story fragments, results screen, upgrades, dialogs and credits, while Echoes' own recorded voices and text-to-speech go quiet, so you only hear one voice. When NVDA is not running, Echoes speaks exactly as before. If you start or quit NVDA while playing, Echoes switches over within about a second.
Gameplay sounds are never muted — footsteps, beacons, pings, the heartbeat, the echo pulse, path guidance tones and music all play as normal. In-level alerts like "One echo remaining" and path guidance updates are always spoken in Echoes' own voice, even with NVDA running, so warnings are never lost while you're moving. NVDA is the only screen reader supported at this time.
New options in Settings
- Copy To Clipboard — copies each line of game text to the clipboard, so you can use NVDA's translation add-ons to hear Echoes in your own language. Off by default.
- Repeat Last Line Key — press L at any time to hear the last line again. Rebindable, and it never fires while you're typing.
Level complete announcement
In Accessible Mode, finishing a level now tells you so before the story begins: "Level 1 complete. You collected 2 Echoes, and earned 16 echo currency. Story fragment 1 unlocked."
Keyboard and gamepad prompts
The tutorial, menus, results screen, upgrades panel and completion ceremony now name the controls you are actually using — keyboard players hear Enter, Backspace, X, and W/A/S/D instead of Quest controller buttons, and gamepad players hear gamepad buttons. Prompts follow your custom key bindings, the tutorial now covers charging and firing the echo pulse with keyboard alone (I and O by default), and the main menu explains its own navigation once per launch.
Fixes
- Story fragments are no longer cut off by the "Press Enter to continue" prompt.
- The upgrades panel no longer says "the ten key" when it means "the X key."
- Key binding rows on the Settings screen are no longer hidden off the edge of the panel.
- The community story filter now catches disguised profanity. Occult and other horror themes are still allowed.
As always — this is an open beta, and your feedback shapes the game. Tell me what works and what doesn't.
